Lost Joy, Low Energy, and Skipped Showers: Subtle Signs of Depression

Here are some less obvious signs of depression that don’t always get the attention they deserve:
1. Anhedonia: The Loss of Joy
One of the hallmark signs of depression is something called anhedonia — the loss of pleasure in things that used to bring joy. You might stop enjoying hobbies, social activities, or even your favourite foods or music. It’s not just sadness; it’s emptiness where happiness used to live.
2. Changes in Hygiene and Self-Care
Depression often drains energy and motivation, making basic self-care feel like climbing a mountain. This might look like:
Not brushing your teeth
Wearing the same clothes for days
Skipping showers
Letting your hair go unwashed
This isn’t laziness — it’s a real symptom of a mental health struggle.
3. Appetite Fluctuations
Your body’s relationship with food might shift. Some people lose their appetite entirely, while others turn to food for comfort. Both can be signs that your mental health needs attention.
4. Reduced Sex Drive
A decrease in libido is another common but rarely talked about symptom of depression. You may feel disconnected from your body or lack interest in intimacy altogether.
5. Sleep Disruptions
Depression can seriously affect your sleep patterns. Some people struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, while others find themselves sleeping excessively — taking long naps, going to bed early, and sleeping in late.
6. Lack of Motivation
Getting out of bed, making meals, or even sending a text can feel impossibly hard. The weight of depression often shows up as a deep, unshakable fatigue and lack of willpower.
7. Hopeless Thoughts
You might find yourself thinking:
“What’s the point?”
“Nothing’s ever going to get better.”
“I don’t want to be here anymore.”
These hopeless thoughts are serious red flags. In some cases, they can escalate to thoughts of suicide. If you or someone you love is experiencing these feelings, it’s time to reach out for help.
